As the year is already beginning to come to a close, we’re now able to reflect on the top breakthrough artists of this year. Some from similar scenes, and some from different ones, these artists have truly impacted the scene of music this year.
1. Melanie Martinez – A 21-year old from New York, Martinez got her start on popular TV show, The Voice. She was eliminated eventually, but that didn’t stop her. In August of 2015, Melanie released her debut album, Cry Baby, which made 32.3k sales in it’s first week of being on sale. SPIN Magazine later named her album #22 on their list of “The Best Pop Albums of 2015”. Martinez is currently on tour for another month across the U.S., Italy, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, and The United Kingdom.
Shawn Mendes- Known for his hit singles, Stitches and Treat You Better, this 18-year old from Toronto, Ontario, Canada first attracted a following in 2013, when he began posting song covers on Vine, an app that allows users to share six-second videos of whatever they choose. Mendes now has two albums on sale, Handwritten, and Illuminate, both debuting atop the US Billboard 200. Shawn is just now finishing up with touring with two more shows to go in Australia, and will begin touring again in March, where he will play one show in the Philippines, and then continue on tour in late April, starting with the United Kingdom, and will eventually be in Cleveland, Ohio on August 2nd.
The Chainsmokers- You might remember them for their super popular, and ultra annoying song, #SELFIE, from 2013. After that, we didn’t hear much of them on the radio until this year, when they suddenly blew up with new hit songs that have topped the pop charts. The Chainsmokers are an American DJ Duo consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. They often feature artists on their tracks, such as Halsey on their hit single, Closer, and Daya on their other popular song, Don’t Let Me Down. The Chainsmokers are currently touring, and will continue to do so until late February.
Twenty One Pilots– First recognized for their song “Stressed Out”, this powerful duo has blown up during this year. The band was formed with four members, but now only consists of Josh Dun (left), who plays the drums for the band, and Tyler Joesph (right), the band’s vocalist. Twenty One Pilots has been very successful this year, with hits Heathens, and Ride being played frequently on the radio. They’re currently touring, and will be touring often throughout 2017.
