Over the weekend, Field High School’s Pen Ohio team participated at Kent State Stark in a three-round creative writing competition.
For those who don’t know, Pen Ohio is a club for any creative writer. Every member is given a prompt that he/she have to include in their story which they only have forty minutes to write. The prompt can be a sentence, a quote, or just even a single word, but your story must have something to do with the given prompt. Pen Ohio is very similar to Power of the Pen, that takes place over at the middle school, but the high school’s team is divided into Junior Varsity, 9th and 10th graders, and Varsity which includes 11th and 12th graders.
At Pen Ohio competitions, writers will go through three forty minute rounds with each round giving a different prompt and will be scored on a scale of one to six, one being the highest and six being the lowest. Awards are also handed out after all the stories are scored.
On Saturday, writers competed in three rounds of writing, watched a magic show, went on a scavenger hunt around campus, and KSU Stark provided lunch for every Pen Ohio participant.
“It was awesome. For the first time we placed out of all the schools.” said Abby Mortimer.”I’m really proud of our teams.”
Pen Ohio welcomes all creative writers to come and join our team. Also, congratulations writers for placing third at this years competition. For more information about Pen Ohio, see coaches Mrs. Tenney or Mrs. Dreger. Hope to see you there next year!
